Main Story: "Sinterklaas"

Every December, the town of Rhinebeck, New York holds a celebration honoring Sinterklaas, the Dutch winter figure whose legend is one of the inspirations for Santa Claus. In this issue, the Sinterklaas appearing in Rhinebeck is no costumed man; it is a sinister spirit punishing the town's children. The Ghostbusters, joined by Special Agent Melanie Ortiz, are called in to deal with the threat.

Ray Stantz and Kylie Griffin research at Ray's Occult Books, consulting Tobin's Spirit Guide, the Spates Catalog, and the Moreci Bestiary (a reference from the Extreme Ghostbusters episode "The Sphinx") to identify the entity. Their research draws connections between the Sinterklaas legend and the Norse god Odin, tracing the bogeyman lineage of the spirit. Writer Erik Burnham later elaborated that the Sinterklaas ghost was evolving into a bogeyman-type spirit, with its goblins (the Zwarte Pieten) being manifestations rather than independent entities.

Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore, and Ortiz respond to the haunting in Rhinebeck, where the spirit of Sinterklaas targets children it deems "naughty." Krampus, the punishing companion of the Sinterklaas legend, appears briefly on the regular cover but has only a shadowy cameo in the story itself. The Brownstone Boy from Ghostbusters II is among Krampus's targets. The story wraps at Rockefeller Plaza, where Janine Melnitz and the rest of the team gather at the Firehouse for the holidays.

    Backup Story: "The Old Days"

The six-page backup story, penciled by Felipe Torrent and colored by Ester Salguero, features Eduardo Rivera and an encounter with Tiamat at Ray's Occult Books. This story directly ties into the eight-part anniversary arc that begins in Issue #13. Erik Burnham confirmed in a November 2013 interview that the backup does connect to that upcoming arc, and a panel preview released November 21 confirmed Eduardo's appearance and the Tiamat encounter. Tiamat's dialogue in the backup alludes to Gozer and the Ghostbusters' escape from the Collectors' Limbo at the start of Volume 2.

    Development

On August 21, 2013, writer Erik Burnham confirmed Issue #11 would involve Sinterklaas. On October 21, Dan Schoening posted a work-in-progress image of Peter Venkman in winter attire. A portion of Erik Burnham's variant cover was posted October 23.

On November 5, 2013, an interview (conducted October 22) revealed that the backup story would be six pages, drawn by Felipe Torrent, would involve Ray's Occult Books, and would tie into the eight-part arc beginning in Issue #13. At that time, Schoening had not finished reading the script, and Burnham had just rewritten a page.

On November 21, panels from the backup confirmed Eduardo Rivera's appearance and the Tiamat encounter. The following day, Schoening posted a work-in-progress of Krampus; a colored teaser of the same figure appeared December 5.

On December 17, 2013, a cover, credits, and seven-page preview were released. On February 26, 2014, Burnham clarified that the Sinterklaas ghost was evolving into a bogeyman-type spirit and that its goblin companions were only manifestations.

    Continuity Notes

    • Melanie Ortiz references the events of Issue #10, when Jasmine was almost taken, and alludes to the Rookie's activities in Chicago and the Bogeyman's appearance at Nevermore Elementary School from Issue #8.
    • On page 6, among the Post-It notes visible at Ray's Occult Books, Stingy Jack is crossed off a list of possible bogeyman-type culprits; he trapped himself in Issue #9.
    • Kylie reviews the first encounter with Gozer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the first film, then references the events of Ghostbusters II five years later.
    • Page 15 is set at Rockefeller Centre, where Winston proposed to Tiyah Clarke the previous December in Volume 1 Issue #16.

    Trivia

This issue is densely packed with visual references across Ghostbusters media and other films. Notable examples include:

    • Page 1: The first panel depicts the intersection of Mill Street and East Market Street in Rhinebeck. Tommy is visually based on Tommy from The Real Ghostbusters episode "Buster the Ghost." His Stay Puft Marshmallow Man doll is a recurring item from that series.
    • Page 2: Wally is based on Tommy's father from the same RGB episode. The interior of the Rhinebeck Village Police Department is inspired by the Kingston Falls Police Department set from the film "Gremlins." Sheriff Frank is based on "Gremlins" character Frank Kelly (played by Scott Brady), and a copy of the Real Ghostbusters episode "A Christmas Humbug" (referred to as "Xmas Marks the Spot") and Gizmo's box from "Gremlins" appear on Wally's desk.
    • Page 3: Peter's deja vu line references "Groundhog Day," starring Bill Murray.
    • Page 4: Odin, his eight-legged horse Sleipnir, and his ravens Huginn and Muninn appear. The design of Sinterklaas's boat is based on Packet Boat 13, used in Rotterdam's Sinterklaas festival in 1993. A Transmorgrifier from the RGB episode "Kitty-Cornered" and a Chomp Bar (a play on Crunch) appear in a child's shoe.
    • Page 6: Among books consulted are Tobin's Spirit Guide and the Spates Catalog, both first mentioned in the original film. A Post-It note references Dan Aykroyd's encounter with Isaac Asimov during filming outside Central Park West; another references the October 1, 1983 start of production on the first film. The Grundel from the RGB episode "The Grundel" appears on a page of Tobin's Spirit Guide. An image of Luko from the Extreme Ghostbusters episode "The Infernal Machine" is also present. The "Gallon's Spectral Almanac" is a nod to the Gray Sports Almanac from "Back to the Future Part II"; "Gallon's" refers to Mikhael Gallon from the backup story in Volume 1 Issue #8.
    • Pages 8, 11, 15: References to "Scrooged" (starring Bill Murray), "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," and The Real Ghostbusters episode "Xmas Marks the Spot" appear throughout the issue, including props, character likenesses, and set design details.
    • Page 15: The Power Guy and Ghost Captors arcades reappear. The Ghost Captors game is from Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Stylized Versions). The team wears outfits from Ghostbusters II. The RI cover from the "Past, Present, and Future" one-shot (set during Christmas) is visible on a pinboard.
    • Page 16: The Summoner Bell from Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Realistic Version) appears on the counter at the Firehouse. The Employee of the Month board is carried over from the same game, with all months showing Peter Venkman (except July, which shows Winston, represented by a stock photo used at conventions by Ernie Hudson).
    • Cover A: Krampus appears on the cover but only as a shadowy cameo in the actual story. The Proton Pistol is also depicted on the cover but does not appear in the story.
