IDW Publishing (also known as Idea & Design Works LLC and IDW Media Holdings) is an integrated media company whose business spans publishing, games, entertainment, and the San Diego Comic Art Gallery. IDW began printing Ghostbusters comics in October 2008, taking over the license previously held by 88MPH Studios. Across roughly twelve years it produced an extensive line of original Ghostbusters stories, crossovers, and collected editions before the license moved on. The last new issue under IDW was Ghostbusters: Year One #4 on July 1, 2020, and on June 8, 2022 it was announced that a new limited series was in the works from Dark Horse Comics.
Publishing history
IDW's earliest Ghostbusters releases were a run of mini-series and one-shots: The Other Side, Displaced Aggression, Past, Present and Future, Tainted Love, Con-Volution, and What in Samhain Just Happened?!. The line then folded the Ghostbusters into IDW's company-wide Infestation crossover event.
The first monthly Ghostbusters series began on September 28, 2011. A second volume launched under the title New Ghostbusters before reverting to Ghostbusters with its fifth issue, and ended on September 24, 2014. The monthly format was followed by two crossover mini-series, one with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and one with The Real Ghostbusters, with Ghostbusters: Get Real bridging into the cartoon's continuity. An annual followed Get Real on November 25, 2015, and a third volume of the monthly series, titled Ghostbusters International, began on January 27, 2016.123
A second annual arrived on February 1, 2017, followed by the six-issue Ghostbusters 101 mini-series, which crossed the IDW team over with the 2016 film cast, beginning March 22, 2017. A sequel to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters crossover ran from November 1 to November 29, 2017. A third annual released on March 7, 2018, and the eight-issue maxi-event Ghostbusters Crossing Over ran from March 14 to November 14, 2018. The weekly four-issue Ghostbusters 35th Anniversary series ran from April 3 to April 24, 2019, and the five-issue Transformers/Ghostbusters: Ghosts of Cybertron ran from June 26 to October 2, 2019. The four-issue Ghostbusters Year One ran from January 22 to July 1, 2020, finishing after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
