Covers
Three cover variants were produced for this issue.
Cover A features main series art by Dan Schoening and Luis Antonio Delgado. A preview was posted on November 20, 2013.
Cover RI depicts every character who has wielded a Proton Pack in the ongoing series: the four original Ghostbusters, Rookie, Ron Alexander, Jenny Moran, Dani Shpak, Lou Kamaka, Janine Melnitz, and Kylie Griffin.
Subscription Cover (by Tristan Jones, with colors by Luis Antonio Delgado) features several entities from The Real Ghostbusters assembled in front of the Firehouse: the Phantom, Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Samhain and his Goblin Minions, the Icon Ghost, Charles Foster Hearse, Drool the Dog-Faced Goblin, Slimer, the Deadly Three, and an Irish ghost. Tristan Jones posted works-in-progress from November 6 through November 18, 2013 as he completed and inked the piece.
Development
Development was documented across several months of creator posts and announcements.
On December 2, 2013, it was confirmed that Winston and Tiyah's wedding would take place in this issue. Erik Burnham completed the first draft of the script on December 3, 2013. Dan Schoening turned in layouts in late December. In a December 31, 2013 interview, Burnham described the wedding as occurring "right off" in the issue and noted there would be big moments for several cast members.
On January 3, 2014, IDW posted a work-in-progress preview of the wedding scene. On January 6, 2014, a panel showing Rookie, Ron Alexander, Melanie Ortiz, and Kylie Griffin working together was shared. Burnham clarified on January 7 that the navy blue flight suits worn by Rookie and Ron reflect a common color for coveralls in the Midwest.
Dan Schoening posted two teasers on February 21, 2014, one of Melanie Ortiz with the Proton Pistol and one of Egon, Ray, and Peter at the wedding. Erik Burnham posted an additional teaser on February 22, 2014. After release, editor Chris Ryall posted pencil-to-color versions of pages 16-17 on February 28, and Luis Antonio Delgado posted an unlettered combined version of pages 4-5 on June 24, 2014.
Continuity and References
The issue's "Story So Far" recap page covers the events of: Ghostbusters (the original film), the Haunted America arc in Volume 1, the New Ghostbusters arc and the Collectors' Limbo storyline in Volume 2, and the Happy Horror Days! arc including the bogeymen encounter.
The issue contains a large number of background visual references across its pages:
- Page 2: A billboard for the "Heart of a Samurai" drink from The Real Ghostbusters, and a Lunar New Year banner dated to February 19, 1996.
- Page 3: Bobby Brown and Ivan Reitman appear in the wedding background. Peter's joke about a toaster refers to the awkward gift scene in Ghostbusters II.
- Page 4: Tiyah's father is visually based on Bill Cosby. Winston's father is drawn to match Edward Zeddemore from The Real Ghostbusters episode "The Brooklyn Triangle." Beau Bridges appears behind Peter.
- Page 5: Members of the Alabama Ghostbusters fan group (Bo Bearden, Brock Parker, and David "Rookie" Railey) are seated in the wedding rows. Stevie Wonder stands against the wall. Ballard Wright, the ghost who hassled Tiyah in "Tainted Love," appears in her section.
- Pages 7-8: Background ghosts include Proteus Unlimited and the Erie from The Real Ghostbusters episode "Janine Melnitz, Ghostbuster."
- Page 14: Dana Barrett's apartment address is 76 East 85th Street. The frame of Johannes Brahms, present in her Ghostbusters II apartment, is visible.
- Page 15: Oscar's refrigerator details include a can of Blody (from RGB "The Halloween Door"), Ravana Pickles (a nod to Extreme Ghostbusters), Luigi's Fresh Pizza Dough (a nod to Luigi from Slimer!), and the ceramic dish from Dana's refrigerator in the original film. The whiteboard has a reminder about cello lessons for "Michael," a nod to Ghostbusters Wiki administrator Mrmichaelt.
- Page 20: Background props include Stay Puft Marshmallows, Wise Natural Potato Chips (seen in Peter's office in the first film), and Ghost Toasties (a reference to the West End Games RPG).
