Background
Callie was born in Chicago in 1982. She grew up without knowing her biological father and developed abandonment issues and a dislike of science as a direct result of Egon's absence, unaware that he was quietly tracking her life from afar. Personality

Her casting was first reported on March 1, 2019, with director Jason Reitman confirming on March 29, 2019, that Coon, Mckenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard would portray the new family. A Vanity Fair first-look article on December 6, 2019, identified Coon's character as a single mother who inherits property from the father she never knew. Coon described her character in 2021 as someone with "a personality, a sense of humor," who gets into the action, not just filling a mom role.
Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon improvised the flirtatious energy between Gary and Callie during the Farmhouse scene. The dinner date between Gary and Callie was filmed at the Enjoy Garden restaurant on Railway Street in Crossfield, Alberta. During chemistry reads, Coon performed the argument scene with Mckenna Grace that ended up in the film.
