Proton Pack

The Proton Pack is the primary ghost-capturing device used by the Ghostbusters. It is a portable particle accelerator worn on the back, paired with a hand-held Particle Thrower (also called the Neutrona Wand or proton gun) that fires a stream of positively charged particles. The stream snares a negatively charged ghost and holds it in place so it can be wrangled over a Ghost Trap for capture. As Peter Venkman put it, each Ghostbuster is "carrying an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back."

The pack was designed in 1984 by Egon Spengler and Ray Stantz. It has appeared in every film of the original continuity, from Ghostbusters (1984) through Ghostbusters II, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, as well as the animated series, the comics, and the video games. How it works

The Proton Pack is the only piece of technology able to strip electrons away from protons. A miniature cyclotron acts as a positron collider, smashing together positrons (the positively charged antimatter counterpart of electrons). The resulting stream of positively charged subatomic particles is fed to the Particle Thrower, which directs it at a ghost.

The positive stream cages and cancels the energy of negatively charged ectoplasmic entities held in an active stream, even when they are out of phase with reality. In practical terms, it fires "positive energy" that ensnares the "negative energy" of a ghost, holding it in place and neutralizing its power so it can be positioned above a Trap. Even if a ghost turns invisible or intangible, its negative energy still exists, slightly out of phase with normal reality; the stream forces it back in sync and holds it for capture.

The packs are nuclear powered. Egon stated the power cells have a half-life of 5,000 years.

Ghostbusters (1984)

Designed in 1984 by Egon Spengler and Ray Stantz, the Proton Pack countered the negative energy of ghosts with a stream of positively charged ions that contained a ghost on contact. The stream was dangerous and barely controllable. At the Sedgewick Hotel, Ray realized the team had never achieved a completely successful test of their equipment, and Egon blamed himself. A successful "field test" was conducted on a chambermaid's cart. Egon later warned that crossing proton streams would result in "total protonic reversal," causing all life to stop instantaneously and every molecule in a user's body to explode at the speed of light. In the film's continuity, the pack made the cover of the October 1984 issue of Omni.

The term "Proton Pack" was not spoken on screen until midway through the second film, when Egon says the team should get their Proton Packs. The term was used in the script drafts of the first movie,1 and appeared publicly in 1984, including in a June 1984 movie review.2

Ghostbusters II

Before the battle with the Scoleri Brothers, Egon notes that the fuel cells of the Proton Pack have a half-life of 5,000 years, and that the pack is "not a toy." The on-screen use of "Proton Pack" as a name first occurs in this film.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Convinced the end of the world was coming again but lacking the support of the other Ghostbusters, Egon took Ecto-1, his Proton Pack and Particle Thrower, all the Traps, and a supply of fuel isotope, and relocated to Summerville. In his underground laboratory he worked on a Proton Pack but never completed it. He also built a containment system of four Proton Cannons and a P.K.E. Meter placed within the Temple of Gozer hidden in a nearby selenium mine, designed to cross streams and force a dimensional gateway shut, and laid out a massive Trap Field in front of his property.

In June 2021, Egon's ghost led his granddaughter Phoebe Spengler to the laboratory, where she found the unfinished Proton Pack. Studying its interior, she noticed two of the CRT Emitters were missing, installed replacements, and finished the build. The next day she tested it at the Summerville Foundry, telling her friend Podcast to "switch me on," an echo of Ray's line to Egon in the Sedgewick Hotel elevator in the first film. After firing at targets, the pair found a ghost, Muncher, and gave chase across town in Ecto-1, causing property damage and getting arrested.

Sheriff Domingo impounded the pack and Ecto-1. After it was placed in a jail cell, the pack eventually made its way to the Farmhouse for the confrontation with Gozer. During the battle, Mini-Pufts disabled the gunner-seat pack, and Gozer wrapped a proton stream around its arm. Peter, Ray, and Winston arrived armed with their own packs and crossed streams against Gozer. When Phoebe began to lose ground, Egon's ghost manifested and helped her hold the thrower steady. The Trap Field was brought back online, allowing the capture of Gozer and its minions.

Before Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

The Ghostbusters Engineer Corps developed a new Proton Pack model with a tri-arm yellow bumper at the Paranormal Research Center. Lars Pinfield managed a faster decay of split time and narrowed the stream intensification. The same technology was used for the Ionic Separator, which extracts ghosts from possessed objects, and for Proton Fields used to hold a ghost in an enclosure for study. At the Firehouse, the packs were charged and stored in a Proton Locker in the garage bay.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

In the summer of 2024, Phoebe picked the lock on the Proton Locker after she was benched, then hid a pack under her bed. After an incident at the New York City Public Library, Mayor Walter Peck had the packs confiscated and scheduled them to be melted down for scrap.

When Garraka was freed from the Orb of Garraka, the standard proton stream had no effect on him. Phoebe took the pack she had hidden, hack-sawed a piece of a fire pole, and brass-plated components of her pack on the reasoning that psychically charged brass could conduct the pack's electrical field. During the final battle, ordinary streams still failed and Garraka froze them, but Phoebe fired a green trifurcated stream that had a noticeable effect. With help from the others stabilizing her against the power of the stream, Phoebe held Garraka at bay until he was drawn into the Containment Unit.

The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters

In the animated continuity the pack was invented by Egon Spengler and built by Ray Stantz, and functioned much as it did in the films, with a hose connecting the pack to the Particle Thrower. The animated pack was recolored blue, and its cyclotron had three lights instead of four. The packs were colored blue partly to comply with toy-safety expectations for role-play items, and partly so the heroes' gear would stand out against the dark, often black, backgrounds of the show.3

Across The Real Ghostbusters, the pack often doubled as a power source, used to jump-start a helicopter, drive Egon's other inventions, and feed external machinery; when a threat demanded more power, the team patched packs into power-plant generators or city infrastructure. The packs needed recharging, received annual maintenance, and could be set to overload, either by a button on the pack or by setting the thrower to maximum, removing the safety, and triggering a destruct sequence. A "Max Boost" option vastly strengthened the stream but could run only about 20 seconds before the pack risked blowing out. Janine Melnitz learned to use a pack, and Louis Tully tried with poor aim. For a time the gear was modified to be effective against people's bioelectric fields as part of the Crimebusters business.

In Extreme Ghostbusters, after the original equipment failed against the highly evolved spirit Achira, Egon redesigned the packs, increasing their nuclear capacity. The thrower was reworked to use proton charges that ejected when spent, with a spare canister carried on the pack, and the Trap was adjusted to match the augmented charge. The team treated the packs as essentially portable fission reactors, a point Eduardo Rivera repeatedly griped about. A compact version, the Proton Pistol, was used by Kylie Griffin. As a safety measure the packs would short out when certain parameters were ignored, with enough force to knock the wearers off their feet.

IDW comics

In the IDW continuity the pack continued to evolve. When the Ghostbusters were scattered across time and space, each built his own variant, and Leonardo da Vinci later modified Janine's pack and made more for new hires. Egon removed the packs' cooling covers before the Schenectady case, which lightened them but reportedly presented a cancer risk, then later adjusted their potency to compensate for prolonged surges affecting ambient psychokinetic energy. Imprisoned in the Collectors' Limbo, the team used a pack to jury-rig a controlled explosion and tear a hole back to their home dimension.

During the crossover with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ray lent a spare pack to Donatello, and the Ramis Boards were upgraded from a six-pin to an eight-pin design, giving the packs access to a wider energy spectrum. The Ramis Board part is named for the late Harold Ramis. The current model is the Mark 4.2.4 Walter Peck wore and used a pack for the first time in Ghostbusters International #7, and the pack was never tested for use in water until Kylie used one to blast a ghost underwater. In Ghostbusters Year One, Ray reveals the nuclear material for the pack was left over from a previously approved experiment. Packs were even built for the Transformers Ectotron and Optimus Prime, the latter generating a "Proton Axe" from his.

A related animated-comic detail: in the 35th Anniversary: The Real Ghostbusters issue, Egon references the "LaMarche Boards," named for Egon's voice actor, Maurice LaMarche; when fouled by ectoplasm, the packs can no longer discharge.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game (Realistic Versions)

The realistic-version pack is an experimental, untested prototype upgrade of the standard Proton Pack, developed by Egon and Ray. By Thanksgiving weekend in 1991 they had completed it with secondary systems meant to make the team more flexible and effective: the redesigned Slime Blower (the Plasm Distribution System), the Composite Particle System, and the experimental Dark Matter Generator. The upper right of the pack carried displays: one tracked the wearer's physical condition, another the pack's heat level, which had to be vented before it shorted out and reset. A new safety feature, the cross-stream governor, kept the team from accidentally crossing streams; doing so deliberately only knocked the involved Ghostbusters down and caused minor harm, and the governor could be turned off in an emergency.

The prototype was handed to a new Experimental Equipment Technician, the Rookie, because Egon was reluctant to risk the others. Over the course of the game the Rookie was trained on the fly through the Sedgewick Hotel, Times Square against the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, the New York City Public Library against the Library Ghost, and a final battle in Central Park against Ivo Shandor, where Egon deactivated the cross-stream governor to finish him off. After the events of the game the experimental packs were deemed too dangerous and were retired; Egon built a successor, the Boson Pack.

Combat settings on this pack included the Blast Stream, a concentrated proton stream that caused heavy property damage; Boson Darts, slow-moving de-polarized bursts that behaved like grenades and overheated the pack quickly; and the Capture Stream, which coiled around a target to cage and wrangle it toward a Trap without overheating. The Boson Dart was activated for the Rookie during the Times Square chase, then added to the rest of the team's packs. The pack weighed 100 pounds in-game, and was eventually tested in the rain during the Central Park sequence.5

The game's pack was such a focus of development that the crew nicknamed it the "sixth Ghostbuster." Designer Glenn Gamble handled its model, HUD, effects, upgrade states, and base weapon design, matching each upgraded silhouette and color scheme to its projectile so players could read the current configuration at a glance. The pack's sounds were built in foley from a recorded replica prop and jumpsuit, layered with a backpack full of junk and various synthesized elements.

Video game variants (stylized versions)

The stylized console version describes the same core technology, an unlicensed nuclear accelerator that concentrates protons through the Neutrona Wand (also called the proton gun, particle thrower, or colloquially the "Thunder-Stick"), with each energy cell having a half-life of 5,000 years. Knobs on the pack adjust stream intensity, length, and polarization. Its settings mirror the realistic version: Blast Stream, Boson Darts (which Stantz and Spengler devised in 1991 as a "shotgun-like" blast that reused already-discharged boson particles), and the Capture Stream.

The stylized Nintendo DS version treats the pack's modes as research projects unlocked in Egon's lab at the Firehouse, including the default Neutrona Wand, the Ecto Wand, and a Composite Particle Overload Pulse that packs proton particles into a dense mass that triggers a large energy-reversal event on impact.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime

In this continuity Egon and Ray continued upgrading the packs over the following decade after discovering that ectoplasm could be charged with different sub-atomic charges. A junior team was the first to use the new version, which added Proton Beam, Fermion Shock, and Plasma Inductor options, each tuned to disperse an entity with a specific energy weakness and reducing the need for Ghost Traps.

Parts and known variants

Documented parts of the primary-canon pack include the Booster, Power Cell, Injectors, Bumper, and Shock Mount, plus components seen in the later films such as the PPD, Data Transfer Line, CRT Emitters, Cyclotron Lid, Mini Cyclotron, and Synchronous Generator. The Frozen Empire upgrade added more than twenty changes, among them a redesigned ion arm, a hazard-stripe power cell, a tri-arm yellow bumper, updated A.L.I.C.E. straps, and a redesigned forward grip. In the IDW comics the packs run on the Ramis Boards.

Production-side variants span the GB1 hero and foam-rubber stunt packs, the GB2 mid-grade and hero Mk II packs, the Afterlife Spengler and gunner-seat packs, and the various Frozen Empire upgraded, stunt, and brass-plated packs.

Prop history and design

For the first film, the rough design grew out of Stephen Dane's sketches based on flamethrowers he remembered from military magazines. Dane built balsa-wood and cardboard prototypes with input from Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd, and once the design was set, Chuck Gaspar's crew built the screen-used packs.6

The packs were heavy. During filming of the first movie they weighed close to 30 pounds fully loaded, with rubber versions for stunts and battery-free versions for scenes where the thrower was not fired. In a later interview Ramis recalled the fully operational packs at roughly 50 pounds, about 20 pounds lighter with the batteries removed, with a lightweight model arriving near the end of the shoot.7 For the second film a lighter model weighing about 28 pounds was made, though it did not light up as much.8

For Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Harold Ramis's original first-film prop was Lidar-scanned, rebuilt "down to the millimetre," and aged.9 Ramis's daughter Violet Ramis-Stiel joined the crew at Sony's archives to scan the prop and tried it on.10 Consulting propmaster Guillaume DeLouche obtained the originals from the Sony archives and enlisted The Hand Prop Room to build the replicas,11 with roughly seventeen molds made and many parts recast.12 The hero packs were cast in aluminum housings and wired with lighting effects that, for the first time, depicted the ions spinning within the cyclotron.13
