Early Life and Education

Dilg grew up in Oceanside, New York, and went on to attend Amherst College in Massachusetts, graduating with the class of 1969.2 While at Amherst, he was matched with fellow student Mimi Kennedy of Smith College through a computer dating service,2 a pairing that would lead to a lasting marriage.

Career

Dilg pursued an acting career through the late 1970s and early 1980s, accumulating a string of small-screen and independent film credits. He made his on-screen debut with a single-episode appearance on the television series 3 Girls 3 in 1977.3 In 1981 he had a supporting role as Potts in the CBS television film Thornwell, a drama about a real-life Army private subjected to secret LSD experiments.3 He appeared as the Clapper Man in the 1983 independent film Strangers Kiss,3 and in 1984 played Jason across two episodes of the CBS detective series The New Mike Hammer.3

During the period when he was filming Ghostbusters, Dilg was working as a 4th grade reading teacher to support himself.1 After his acting career wound down, he transitioned fully into education, becoming a high school English teacher in North Hollywood, California.1

Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters (1984)

Dilg appeared as the Con Edison Man in Ghostbusters, seen in Chapter 21: Out of Biz.4 The character is a Con Edison utility worker encountered by the Ghostbusters during the story.

The shoot had its share of wardrobe mishaps. The Con Edison costume provided to Dilg had been fitted to a body double who stood in for him during the location shoot outside Hook and Ladder Company 8 in New York City.1 For the Los Angeles-based filming, Dilg received a helmet that was too small for his head. On the first take, the helmet fell off; when he bent down to retrieve it, the tools in his utility belt spilled out, prompting laughter on set.1 Throughout the filmed scenes, Dilg can be seen holding onto his helmet and belt to keep them in place.

Personal Life

Dilg has been married to actress Mimi Kennedy since May 27, 1978.1 The two met as college students through a computer dating service linking Amherst College and Smith College.2 They have two children together.5

After his transition to teaching, Dilg became the English teacher of Annie Potts's son. Her son went on to attend an Ivy League college and majored in English.
