Special Effects Photos is a collection of behind-the-scenes production photography hosted on GBFans.com, documenting how the practical creatures and visual effects of Ghostbusters (1984) were built and shot. The images show sculpting, mold work, mechanical puppetry, suit construction, and on-set performance for some of the film's most recognizable ghosts. Rather than digital effects, the 1984 film leaned on miniatures, animatronics, and people in suits, and these photos pull back the curtain on that work.

The page is organized into separate galleries for the film's major creature effects. A companion set of Production Sketches covers the concept and design art for many of the same characters.

  • Stay Puft

The Stay Puft gallery covers the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, from the construction of the giant's interior skeleton and face to photographs of the performer wearing the costume on set. Bill Bryan suited up to play the Marshmallow Man for the scenes of the giant walking through New York City.1 The photos range from in-progress shop work on the head and frame to the finished suit on the street.

    Terror Dogs

The Terror Dog gallery documents the two demonic hounds, Vinz Clortho and Zuul, in their various physical forms. The images run from small-scale miniatures used for distant or full-body shots up to full-scale animatronic dogs for closer work. One photo shows Sigourney Weaver, who played Dana Barrett, seated in a chair with the Terror Dogs.2 Another set captures the sculpting of a Terror Dog before the larger version was built.3

    Onion Head (Slimer)

The Onion Head (Slimer) gallery collects production photos of the green ghost, Slimer, who was nicknamed "Onion Head" during production. The images show how the puppet and its mechanics were assembled for the film.

    Library Ghost

The Library Ghost gallery covers the apparition from the New York Public Library sequence that opens the film, including the making of the character. The role was performed by Ruth Oliver.4

    Behind the effects

The 1984 film's creature and optical effects were produced through a combination of shop-built puppets, full-size suits, miniatures, and motion-controlled animatronics. The galleries on this page focus on that hands-on craft: the molds, armatures, and mechanisms that brought the ghosts to the screen before being composited into the finished shots. For the design work that preceded the builds, see the related Production Sketches.
