Early life and education
Romano was born in Toronto to an Italian family. He trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and also studied at the Actors' Studio, Brooks Studio, and the Toronto School of Drama.3
Career
Romano began his professional career in on-screen television roles in the early 1990s. He had a guest appearance in the science fiction series TekWar (1995) and appeared in the Disney Channel film Halloweentown (1998).2
His voice acting career accelerated in the second half of the 1990s. In 1995 he voiced Tuxedo Mask / Darien Phillips in the North American English dub of the anime series Sailor Moon.2 He voiced Eduardo Rivera in Extreme Ghostbusters (1997), then took on the role of Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the animated series Spider-Man Unlimited (1999-2001), reprising that performance in the Neversoft video games Spider-Man (2000) and Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro (2001),2 and in X-Men: Mutant Academy 2.4
His most prominent role came when he was cast as the title character in The Batman (2004-2008), voicing both Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne across all five seasons of the series, which aired on Kids WB and Cartoon Network.2
Additional significant credits include Luis Sera in Capcom's Resident Evil 4 (2005), Randy Hernandez in Godzilla: The Series (1998-2000), Carlos "Stunts" Rey in NASCAR Racers, and characters King Pen and Scorp in the Skylanders franchise.2 Romano narrated the long-running PBS animated series Curious George from 2007 through 2022 and the television courtroom program Hot Bench (2014-2020), as well as documentary specials on the Travel Channel.2
Romano holds membership in the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), and the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television, and Radio Artists (ACTRA). He is represented in Los Angeles by Sutton, Barth and Vennari and in Toronto by Edna Talent Management Ltd.3
Ghostbusters
Extreme Ghostbusters
Romano voiced Eduardo Rivera, the sardonic, street-smart new member of the Ghostbusters team, in all 40 episodes of Extreme Ghostbusters (1997). The casting process was unusually protracted. Romano auditioned for the role but was not selected initially. Two child actors were cast in his place, including one who was 16 years old, but the production team was not satisfied. Romano received a callback approximately two weeks later, yet that round again came down to him and one other actor, and Romano did not get the part at that stage either. A week or two after that second audition he was brought back for a paid audition in which he recorded alongside the full cast. During the session he sat next to Jason Marsden (voice of Roland Jackson), who reportedly did a spit take on recognizing him, having mistaken Romano for a previously cast actor due to a physical resemblance. Romano was ultimately selected for the role.
The series was produced by Adelaide Productions, the same animation studio behind Godzilla: The Series (1998-2000), and Romano voiced Randy Hernandez in that series as well, connecting the two Adelaide productions through both studio and lead cast.
