Early life
Whyte was born in Bangor, Gwynedd, Wales, and grew up in Brighton, England.1 His exceptional height drew him toward basketball at an early age, and he went on to build a professional athletic career that spanned much of his twenties.
Career
Basketball
Whyte competed as a professional basketball player across several European leagues.1 His international career included 80 caps for the England national team. Club highlights included a Portuguese championship season with FC Porto in 1996 to 1997 and a six-year tenure with the Newcastle Eagles.1 He retired from professional basketball in 2003 and subsequently moved into stunt work and acting, fields where his stature of 7 feet 1 inch quickly opened doors.1
Acting and stunt work
Whyte's first high-profile role came in Paul W. S. Anderson's AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004), where he portrayed Scar, the central Predator of the film, as well as doubling as Celtic and Chopper in shots where the three Predators did not appear on screen together. He also played the Ancient Predator.1 He reprised creature work in the franchise with Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), playing Wolf.1
He broadened his creature work with Clash of the Titans (2010), playing Sheikh Suleiman, and appeared in the Harry Potter franchise across multiple productions, including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010). In Dragonball: Evolution (2009) he portrayed the giant ape Oozaru.1
Whyte received one of his most acclaimed physical roles in Ridley Scott's science-fiction epic Prometheus (2012), playing the Last Engineer, the ancient humanoid whose species seeded life on Earth.1 The character appears considerably taller on screen than Whyte's own 7-foot-1 frame, achieved through digital enhancement.3 To prepare, Whyte learned phrases in the Engineer language, a constructed tongue developed by a linguistics consultant from a reconstructed ancient language featuring clicks and guttural sounds.3
He became one of the most recognisable recurring physical performers in HBO's Game of Thrones (2011 to 2019), setting a show record by portraying four distinct characters across the series.4 In seasons 1 and 2 he played White Walkers. Season 2 also saw him take over the role of Ser Gregor Clegane, the fearsome "Mountain", as the second of three actors to play the character.1 In season 3 he played an unnamed giant among Mance Rayder's wildling host. From season 5 onwards he portrayed Wun Wun, the last giant, a speaking role and one of the show's more emotionally resonant supporting presences before the character's death at Winterfell following the Battle of the Bastards.1
Whyte has been a consistent presence in the Star Wars universe across its Disney era. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) he played Bollie Prindel and other creature characters, and served as Peter Mayhew's stunt double for Chewbacca.1 In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) he portrayed the mercenary Moroff.2 He continued creature and stunt work through Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), and the Disney+ series Andor, where he played Vetch.2
Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Whyte served as the on-set puppeteer for Garraka, the ancient death-chill entity who serves as the central supernatural threat of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024).2 His physical performance on set provided the foundation for the creature's movements before visual effects completed the character. Garraka's voice was provided separately by the film's director and co-writer, Gil Kenan.5
In the lore of the film, Garraka is a phantom god who fought alongside the warlord Samudari approximately 4,000 years ago before turning against humanity.6 His horns, the source of his greatest power, were ripped from his head. He channeled human fear into a weapon called the Death Chill and was ultimately imprisoned inside a brass orb by a band of mythical spirit catchers known as the Fire Masters, around 1976 BCE.6 A lone Fire Master resealed the orb again in 1904 before Garraka could escape during a gathering at the Manhattan Adventurers Society.6 In the present day, his first act after escaping captivity is to enter Firemaster Smoke N Vape and kill the shop clerk with a freezing attack after mistaking the store's name for a reference to the ancient order that imprisoned him.6
Garraka subsequently appeared as a playable Overlord entity in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, released as the fifth free DLC on March 26, 2024,7 and is referenced in Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord.
