Early life

Edward Albert was born in Los Angeles on February 20, 1951, the son of character actor Eddie Albert (1906--2005) and Mexican actress and dancer Margo (born Maria Marguerita Guadalupe Teresa Estela Bolado Castilla y O'Donnell, 1917--1985). Growing up in a theatrical household gave Albert early exposure to the entertainment industry, though he pursued academic interests as well. He attended Oxford University and later studied psychology at UCLA before a film offer interrupted his studies and launched his acting career.1

Career

Albert made his screen debut at age 14 in The Fool Killer (1965), appearing opposite Anthony Perkins as a young runaway teaming up with a tormented Civil War veteran. His breakthrough came with Butterflies Are Free (1972), in which he played a blind young man opposite Goldie Hawn. The performance earned him a Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year, as well as a nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, establishing him as a major new presence in Hollywood.1

He went on to a prolific career in both film and television. Film credits included Midway (1976), The Greek Tycoon (1978), Galaxy of Terror (1981), and Guarding Tess (1994). On television, he starred in the prime-time soap The Yellow Rose (NBC, 1983--1984) and had recurring roles in Beauty and the Beast (CBS, 1987--1990) and Falcon Crest (CBS, 1986--1987). Later in his career he moved into voice work for animated series, including Spider-Man: The Animated Series, and took the live-action role of Mr. Collins in Power Rangers Time Force (2001). Over the course of his career he appeared in over 130 film and television projects.1

Extreme Ghostbusters

Albert provided guest voice work on Extreme Ghostbusters in 1997, appearing in two episodes of the animated series.

Episodes

  • The Jersey Devil Made Me Do It -- notably, his father Eddie Albert also provided a voice role in this same episode, making it a rare on-screen pairing of the two actors.

Personal life

In the 1970s, Albert was engaged to actress Kate Jackson. He married British-born actress Katherine Woodville in 1978; the couple had one daughter, Thaïs Carmen Albert, who became a singer-songwriter.1

Beyond acting, Albert devoted substantial energy to environmental and Native American causes from the 1980s onward. He was a particular advocate for the Chumash people and served on both the California Coastal Commission and the California Native American Heritage Commission. In recognition of his conservation work, Escondido Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains was renamed the Edward Albert Escondido Trail and Waterfalls.1

Death

Albert was diagnosed with lung cancer in early 2005. He died on September 22, 2006, surrounded by family at his home in Malibu, California. He was 55 years old. His death came approximately 16 months after the death of his father, Eddie Albert, who had died on May 26, 2005.1
