Early life
Hemsworth was born in Melbourne, Victoria, to Leonie (a teacher) and Craig Hemsworth (a social-services counsellor). His childhood was split between Melbourne and Bulman, a remote community in the Northern Territory of the Australian Outback, before the family settled back in Melbourne, where he attended Heathmont College. He is the middle of three brothers: older brother Luke and younger brother Liam are both actors, making the Hemsworths one of the most recognizable acting families to come out of Australia.2
Career
Hemsworth began his screen career on Australian television, appearing in two episodes of the children's fantasy series Guinevere Jones in 2002 before landing the role of Kim Hyde on the long-running soap opera Home and Away, which he played for roughly 171 episodes from 2004 to 2007. The exposure carried him to Hollywood, where he made his feature breakthrough as George Kirk, James T. Kirk's doomed father, in the opening sequence of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009).2
His career-defining role arrived in 2011 with the title part in Marvel's Thor. He has reprised the character across the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Thor sequels and in the Avengers ensemble films, becoming one of the franchise's central figures over more than a decade. Alongside the Marvel work he built a broad filmography: Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) as Eric the Huntsman, the Formula One drama Rush (2013) as British racing champion James Hunt, the whaling epic In the Heart of the Sea (2015) as Owen Chase, and Men in Black: International (2019) as Agent H. He led the action thrillers Extraction (2020) and Extraction II (2023) as mercenary Tyler Rake, films he also produced. In 2024 he played the villain Dementus in George Miller's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga3 and voiced a young Optimus Prime in the animated Transformers One.2
Beyond scripted work, Hemsworth fronts the National Geographic and Disney+ documentary series Limitless, exploring human longevity and resilience. During production of the first season (2022) a battery of genetic testing revealed he carries two copies of the APOE4 gene variant, a configuration associated with substantially elevated Alzheimer's disease risk and one held by only a small fraction of the population; he chose to disclose the finding publicly to raise awareness of preventive health and genetic testing.4 A second season, Limitless: Live Better Now, followed in 2025.2

Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016)
Hemsworth was reported to have joined the cast on June 10, 2015, as the receptionist for director Paul Feig's reboot, alongside Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. His character, Kevin Beckman, is a cheerfully oblivious receptionist whose good looks are matched only by his uselessness, an intentional reversal of the action-hero parts that made Hemsworth famous.
Feig and Hemsworth share the same talent agent, Bryan Lourd, and Feig learned through Lourd that Hemsworth was interested in a role in the film. Feig told him that Kevin would be written as Australian, matching Hemsworth's own nationality, so that he could simply be himself in the part. Despite the offer, Hemsworth nearly quit the night before his first scheduled shoot day: a new draft of the script had not incorporated the changes Feig had discussed with him a month earlier, and he was ready to walk. Lourd arranged a last-minute meeting at which Feig promised substantial room for improvisation throughout filming, and that assurance brought Hemsworth back.
On set, Hemsworth found the whole situation ridiculous and deliberately channeled that feeling into Kevin's oblivious, upbeat performance. Several moments in the finished film came directly from that approach. Kevin's habit of covering his eyes with his hands instead of his ears when answering the phone, a detail nicknamed "Mike Hat," was invented by Hemsworth during filming. When Kevin trips just after being hired, that stumble is Hemsworth actually tripping on the day, kept in the cut. For the sequence in which a possessed Kevin drives away on Ecto-2, a digital head replacement was required because the stunt double did not sufficiently resemble Hemsworth and the texture of the double's hair differed enough to be noticeable, so Hemsworth's head was composited over the double's in post-production.
Some of Hemsworth's scenes were filmed in stages because of his schedule. The Mercado Hotel sequence, in which characters throw food and water to Kevin outside the building, was shot first with Hemsworth present and completed weeks later without him. His end-credits tag scenes were filmed entirely alone on a one-walled set; Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy returned to the same set weeks later to record their reactions to his lines without him present. Hemsworth announced the completion of his filming via Twitter on August 21, 2015.
Hemsworth is also thanked by name in the acknowledgments of Ghosts from Our Past: Both Literally and Figuratively: The Study of the Paranormal (Three Rivers Press), the in-universe companion book tied to the 2016 film (page 215).5

In Ghostbusters 101 #3, Erin Gilbert's extended tirade about Kevin Beckman is written as a low-level nod to Thor, the character Hemsworth portrays in the Marvel films.6
Personal life
Hemsworth has been married to Spanish actress and model Elsa Pataky, known for the Fast & Furious franchise, since December 2010. The couple have three children: daughter India Rose, born in 2012, and twin sons Sasha and Tristan, born in 2014. The family is based in Byron Bay, in New South Wales, Australia.2 Following the genetic findings revealed during Limitless, Hemsworth spoke publicly about reassessing his work pace and lifestyle in light of his elevated Alzheimer's risk.
