Early life

McKay was born on April 27, 1936, in Walla Walla, Washington.1 Details of her early education and formal training are not widely documented, but she established herself in the Los Angeles entertainment industry by the late 1960s, becoming a working character actress at a time when very few women were pursuing careers in comedy.

Career

McKay's professional work spanned more than fifty years. Contemporaneous with trailblazers such as Phyllis Diller, she was among the first generation of female comedians to gain a foothold in mainstream Hollywood. Her television work was prolific across the late 1960s and 1970s, with recurring guest-star appearances on some of the era's most-watched network series. She was a familiar presence in shows such as Marcus Welby, M.D., Adam-12, Room 222, Green Acres, Gomer Pyle: U.S.M.C., Ironside, Night Gallery, Mannix, and The Beverly Hillbillies, typically cast as teachers, neighbors, secretaries, reporters, or concerned parents.1

Her film work included the disaster epic Airport (1970), the Joe Dante period comedy Matinee (1993), The First of May (1999), and Lonely Hearts (2006).1

In later years McKay continued to find roles in contemporary productions, appearing in Transparent, The Village, and the legal drama Elsbeth (2024).1 She appeared in the Adam Sandler Netflix comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (2023) and the holiday television movie Trivia at St. Nick's (2024), in which she played an "Octogenarian Professor."1 One of her most unexpected late-career credits was voice work in Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption II (2018), where she voiced the character Ms. Hobbs.1

Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)

McKay appeared in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire as Ms. Mikowski, a grieving widow who arrives at Ray's Occult Books to appear on the "Repossessed" program early in the film.2 Her character is convinced that her late husband Harold's spirit is bound to his wristwatch. The watch is tested and determined to hold no paranormal presence; Podcast then destroys it with the "Hammer of Truth," the show's method for disposing of ordinary objects.2 The role was among McKay's final screen appearances.

Death

Allison McKay died on December 7, 2025, in Vermont, at the age of 89.1 News of her passing circulated publicly in late January 2026, prompting coverage in Ghostbusters fan media noting her role in Frozen Empire.2
