Plot

Slimer, while pretending to drive a race car, stumbles upon the Bijou Theatre, which is showing "Haunted Spaceship in 3D," his favorite movie. The apparent lead monster grabs Slimer, but it turns out to be Bud wearing a promotional costume for his part-time job at the theater. Bud offers Slimer a deal: help clean up and get in to see the movie for free. Slimer takes the job and is assigned to sweep the projection room while Bud opens the concession stand, though he gets tangled in the projector reel along the way.

Professor Dweeb also happens to pass the theater and sees the marquee for "Haunted Spaceship," his own all-time favorite film. He drags his reluctant companion Elizabeth inside, sneaking her past Bud. Slimer finds a seat in the auditorium, but gets heckled for blocking the view and ends up stuck to a wad of gum. His popcorn and drink break free and rain down on Dweeb below. Dweeb starts to shout, then quickly backs down when another audience member shouts louder.

A scary scene in the film sends Slimer fleeing to the bathroom, where Dweeb spots him and gives chase. The pursuit carries all three, Slimer, Dweeb, and Elizabeth, straight into the movie screen and into the in-film world. Dweeb fires his Lead Line Clutches at Slimer, but Slimer dodges and the device clamps onto the Squid Monster's head instead. The monster, further provoked by Dweeb's insults, sweeps the clamp off and drops Dweeb and Elizabeth into a watery pit. Dweeb grudgingly concedes Elizabeth can pick the next movie; she bites his nose and does not let go.

Back in the real theater, Bud finds Slimer in the lobby and passes along his boss's request that Slimer return the next day. Slimer politely declines and heads out.

Characters

Slimer is the green ghost protagonist of Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters. In this episode his love of monster movies and his tendency to find trouble drives the entire plot.

Bud is a human friend of Slimer's who works part-time at the Bijou Theatre as a movie promoter and concession attendant.

Professor Dweeb is Slimer's recurring human antagonist, obsessed with capturing the ghost. His shared taste in monster films with Slimer puts him at the same screening, setting off the chase.

Elizabeth is Dweeb's small animal companion, carried in his coat pocket. She tries (unsuccessfully) to warn Dweeb about the Squid Monster and ends the episode biting Dweeb's nose.

The Squid Monster is the creature featured in the in-universe film "Haunted Spaceship in 3D." When Slimer, Dweeb, and Elizabeth enter the movie, the Squid Monster becomes a real threat. Dweeb's Lead Line Clutches accidentally latch onto the creature before it turns on Dweeb and drops him into a pit.

Equipment and Locations

Dweeb's Van is Professor Dweeb's vehicle, used to travel to and from the theater.

Lead Line Clutches are one of Dweeb's gadgets for capturing Slimer, a clamp-and-line device. In this episode the device misfires and grabs the Squid Monster rather than Slimer.

The Bijou Theatre is the movie house where the episode takes place. It is showing "Haunted Spaceship in 3D," described as both Slimer's and Dweeb's all-time favorite film.

Trivia

  • The man in the brown seat next to Slimer in the theater is wearing a shirt with "DIC" on the front, a nod to DIC Entertainment, the company that produced the Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters series.
  • "The Haunted Spaceship" is cited as Professor Dweeb's all-time favorite movie as well as Slimer's, providing an ironic link between the two adversaries.
  • A theme similar to the main theme from Jaws is used several times during tense scenes.
  • The episode was recorded on July 20 and July 27, 1988. Jeff Altman recorded his parts separately on July 27, 1988.
