Ghostbusters 3

The third film in the Ghostbusters franchise, now in the scripting stage of pre-production at Sony Pictures. The writing team includes Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, who frequently contact Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman to get feedback, as well as to be sure they're headed in the right direction with it. The plot involves the four old Ghostbusters as mentors to new Ghostbuster Cadets, who are in training. The cadets include both guys and gals as well as a leader that we don't know much about at this time. They'll also be training with new Ghostbusting equipment, including a Psychotron, Accelerators, and a device that allows the user to flip from dimension to dimension called the Neuron Splitter.History of UpdatesThe movie that may or may never get made. Constantly rumored to be on again and off again, Ghostbusters 3 has been in "development hell" for a long time. Rumor had started of a new film as early as 1997; also making the scene would be the new and not well accepted cartoon show EXTREME GHOSTBUSTERS in a way to test the waters with the idea of new Ghostbusting recruits. Already nearly a decade ago, as far as the general audience knows, the entire original cast was included while also enlisting the help of some of the late 90's comedians. Mentioned but not confirmed had included names like Will Smith, Chris Farley and even Conan O'Brien. Some say Chris Farley's death contributed to the films halt around the same time. Some were so certain the film was getting made, it even appears as a finished credit on Dan Aykroyd's filmography on the Blues Brothers DVD. Aykroyd wrote the script, which was described by IGN as being "too technical", with a new team of Ghostbusters that were not clearly delineated and had no group conflict or leading personalities. Bill Murray has been thought to have held up the making of a third Ghostbusters movie, despite Aykroyd's enthusiasm, due to his desire not to do another live action movie and his dislike of sequels. At one time in the films development it seemed as though they had made a break through with Murray with rumors stating then that he would appear in the film but only for a brief time and as a Ghost. Later in 2005 Harold Ramis had exhibited more interest in the project mentioning Ben Stiller as a possible replacement for Venkman. The film would follow the Ghostbusters as they cope with Venkman's death and look for a replacement while dealing with ghosts being rejected from Hell. This never seemed to make it past the point of internet banter. This past year, during his interview with Mike McGuire on CISN Country 103.9 FM in Edmonton, Alberta, Dan Aykroyd announced that Ghostbusters III: Hellbent will be CGI. "I can do all the things I wanted to do for much, much less money," he stated. Later on a Canadian morning show he elaborated more on the third films revised plot involving Bill Murray. "We go to the hell side of Manhattan, downtown, Foley Square. It's all where the cops are--they are all blue minotaurs. Central Park is this huge peat mine with green demons there, surrounded by black onyx thousand-foot high apartment buildings with classic red devils, very wealthy. We go and visit a Donald Trump-like character who is Mr. Sifler. Luke Sifler. Lu-cifer. So we meet the devil in it". Since this statement it has been confirmed that Aykroyd may have been misunderstood and been talking about the now announced Ghostbusters Video game to be released this Fall. However details involving the third film based game have not been completely weened away from that stated above. The February 2008 copy of Total Film magazine has stated that the game will use the plot devices of the third film, quoting Aykroyd as saying, "This is essentially the third movie". All old cast members have been signed on to the video game aside from Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver. Recently, Ernie Hudson told Moviehole.net, that Ghostbusters III is still very much a possibility. He said he hoped that the new video game would generate renewed interest in a 3rd Ghostbusters film. With Ivan Reitman's son Jason on the Oscar ballad, he was interviewed and asked if he would ever show an interest in picking up the Ghostbusters franchise. He stated that he had little interest in directing the franchise; it was his father's creation. Premier magazine caught up with Sigourney Weaver recently where interviewer Ryan Stewart asked her about the possibility of a 3d animated Ghostbusters film in which she stated, “Well, I just saw Ivan Reitman at this dinner, this lunch for his son, and, ummm, there’s no way.” Although the future may seem dim for such a thriving franchise after reading this slump of rumors and let downs, it seems it's not over yet. Sony has announced that they will be releasing "big" news regarding the franchise at the San Diego Comic Con 2008. The convention program features a teaser similar in graphics to that of the box set cover reading, "Something Exciting Is Coming To The Neighborhood!" The role of a 5th Ghostbuster was not only ran by Reitman's son, one incident happened in early 2003 where a proto-actor expressed dismay at the idea of creating a 3rd movie so soon after 2001. All four Professionals left the encounter bewildered and the un-named man up for Oscar Barrett may have ruined all chances for a live action third movie in the 21st century. Dan Aykroyd has stated that a third movie is highly unlikely. He did say that the GB game is essentially the third movie. Hudson, and Aykroyd hope the games sells well enough it will make Sony want to green light another sequel. In addition to the GB 3 script, Aykroyd does have a GB 4 script as well. Hopeing that if a GB 3 ever gets the green light they can go ahead, and film the 4th movie much like Matrix 2 & 3 were shot back to back.New DevelopmentsIn September 2008, Dan Aykroyd revealed that Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg from The Office (USA version) had been hired by Sony to write a new script; Harold Ramis confirmed the rumor adding that the story will be about the old GBs training a new and younger team. Then, in October, Bill Murray said that "the wounds from Ghostbusters II are healed", expressing interest in a third movie. He'll be part of it if the script will be good enough. Recently Dan Aykroyd talked about the project saying that a script may be ready for early summer and the shotting will may start in late fall '09. This month (March 27, 2009) MTV interviewed Harold Ramis. He confirmed that a script is in the works and: 1- Aykroyd, Reitman and Ramis are working with the Office's writing duo. Reitman and Ramis are hoping that someone else will direct the movie. 2- The plot will see the old GBs training a group of (actually unknown) younger busters and that all the original cast is onboard...he's waiting for a finished script before speaking with Bill Murray "waiting for a truckload full of money."
