Work on The Real Ghostbusters

Both of Gerrold's episodes aired during the show's second season in 1987. They carry the writing influences he was known for, leaning on horror and science fiction touchstones rather than straightforward monster-of-the-week plots.

"Adventures in Slime and Space" first aired on September 15, 1987. After Slimer passes through one of Egon's inventions, he splits into thousands of tiny Slimers that coat New York City in green goo, and the Ghostbusters' attempt to reverse the process produces a single giant, hostile Slimer. In the DVD commentary, Gerrold noted he drew inspiration for the episode from "More Tribbles, More Troubles," an episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series that he also wrote.

"The Hole in the Wall Gang" first aired on October 21, 1987. The Ghostbusters take a case at the mansion of cheese magnate Charles Von Limburger, where every hole in a wall becomes an opening for a ghost, and the bigger the hole, the bigger the ghost.1 In his episode introduction on the Complete Collection set, Gerrold said the episode was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and folds in many references to Lovecraft's work; the case is set in Arkham, the fictional Massachusetts town from the Lovecraft Country mythos.

Other work

Gerrold's best-known credit outside the franchise is the Star Trek episode "The Trouble with Tribbles," which co-starred Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov. He revisited some of the same characters and concepts in "More Tribbles, More Troubles" for Star Trek: The Animated Series, the same episode he cited as a model for "Adventures in Slime and Space."
