Extreme Ghostbusters (1997)

2 min read

Four or Six years after The Real Ghostbusters dropped completely off the air (depending on where you lived); rumors were flying about the possibility of a third Ghostbusters movie; several franchises had gotten another chance and it only seemed right that Ghostbusters did as well. Well while fans waited for a third movie to develop Sony brought us Extreme Ghostbusters! Egon Spengler, Janine, and Slimer all return and gather four of Egon's students to get back into the ghost busting buisness. This rag tag team of four college students include Kylie a goth girl obsessed with the paranormal, Eduardo a cocky slacker, Roland the sensible brains, and Garret the wheel chair bound rush junkie from Brooklyn Heights. So when there is extreme new ghosts trying to take over the world who you gonna call? The Extreme Ghostbusters! The series was produced by Sony and brought back many of the original team from The Real Ghostbusters. This led to a lot of stories being connected to the original series such as the return of The Grundel and even a return of the entire original cast for a two part special. While many fans complained about the very P.C. new characters and the pointlessly updated equipment (which was shown to be a necessity then later they used the old equipment to complete success) the stories were fairly solid and showed lots of promise. Sadly Sony and the company that was given the rights to distribute the cartoon did everything wrong when it came to promoting the show and giving it good time slots for airing. Many areas got the show well into the morning when the old fans were at work and the age group the show suited was at school, leaving pre-school kids to watch it on a daily basis. So sadly the show ran for only one season of 39 episodes. The cartoon did seem to last past its prime though with a run of toys that stayed on shelves long after the show was over and even a few video games.
