Harold was born in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Harold started his career with the Second City comedy troupe in Chicago and expanded his role as a writer and actor in the SCTV comedy show. He later left the show to pursue a career in films. Ramis was one of three writers on National Lampoon’s Animal House; the movie went on to break box office records for a comedy at the time. His first shot as a director came in 1980 with the hit Caddyshack, and 1993's Groundhog Day (which Ramis wrote and directed) is considered by some to be his masterpiece.

While not the most immediately recognizable of the Ghostbusters, Ramis' work has left an indelible mark on comedy films and an influence that extends to writers, directors, and actors to this day. He continues to act and direct, accepting small parts in films such as Orange County and Knocked Up.

In 2004 Harold received a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame at 6338 Delmar Street in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2009 he returned as the voice of Dr. Egon Spengler in the Ghostbusters: The Video Game.

Quotes

(about living in Chicago) “In Los Angeles, Steven Spielberg walks in and you’re nothing. Here, there’s nobody better than me. There’s a few Bulls around, and the Cusacks, but, basically, I’m it!”
