I can’t believe no one responded to this. The freelance and free to download Ectocism by Nick Ross, unaffiliated to Sony apparently.
I have read every (single) GB comic from 2000’s 88 mph through IDW to Dark Horse. Literally every single one.
This Ectocism was recently released (2024). In my view it’s the best GB comic ever written, without hyperbole. For these reasons:
-The tone of each character is perfectly written. Better even than the recent movies. The mannerisms, remarks, jokes, character traits, personalities of each character perfectly matches them and are dialed up to 11. Egon is more Egon than I’ve ever seen, Venkman is wittier than he’s ever been, etc. It’s amazing how this one writer managed to get them so right (even better than the official comics)
-The style of the drawings are unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s like watching a movie. At first I thought they were digitized versions of movie stills, or AI, but apparently I read someone say they are actually paintings? They are so realistic, Venkmans sarcastic looks, Ray’s surprised looks. It’s weird, it’s like the mannerisms look like stills from movies the actors have been in but I’ve never seen these movies.
-The drawing style is also drawn to look like a 1980’s movie on a CRT screen. One of the reasons it really feels like a movie.
-The easter eggs and callbacks are very deep. Tattoo shops on St Marks, etc.
-The story has so many recurring characters from the movies, even fleshing out people who we’ve barely seen. Like Tully’s cousin.
-It’s free
I genuinely hope I can see more of this guy’s GB work in the future
-It’s 300 pages over 8 issues.
