Plus, in-universe they kinda buttoned up any chance of the threat being Gozer since after 1984, 2021 is the next time it would be feasible for it to cross over to Earth.
The predicted years for Gozer's arrival (based on the inscribed years on the Gozerian temple walls in Afterlife) don't include anything between 1984 and 2021, so it wouldn't make sense for another Gozer related entity to appear in the 90's. Honesty that could make things a little weird for how a terror puppy could exist. Plus it isn't really confirmed if we have an overarching villain or if it's the standard "monster of the week" fare where the terror puppy could be a safe bet for being an unrelated creature.

Also, with a new team taking over, it feels like this series will almost assuredly take place after Egon has bolted for Summerville. I think it could undercut Egon's story in Afterlife to have Gozer return in the 90s, while he's out there trying to prevent it from returning later. Then Ray not believing him, even after battling Gozer a second time? I really hope they don't do that. I feel we're more likely to get Vigo again, since they've already discussed the possibilities.

As for the mythology surrounding the terror dogs, it's gotten a bit clouded within the film universe. Originally, they were just minions of Gozer that looked like dogs. Afterlife makes the claim that they aren't really dogs, but rather more elevated beings that must take that form in order to perform the ritual. If there is a terror dog in the show, then they must also exist independently as their own creature. So, perhaps not all of them are tied to Gozer. Not unlike the terror dogs in RGB.

Hopefully, we get a Ray Stantz lore dump to explain some of this.

I'd welcome that. It could be a neat way to keep the Spenglers involved with the animated projects. Ernie did say something about Winston still owning the company. He could have misspoken, or perhaps there is a Citizen Ghost-style framing device at work.

Given the presence of a hitherto-unmentioned team of new recruits who naturally aren't reference in any of the other post-Ghostbusters II media, the animated series could be canon-divergent like Spirits Unleashed, and so it may even be set before Egon's departure to Summerville, but may hint at (or even show) his growing disinvestment with Ghostbusters Inc.

It could be they just start out as interns or technicians to test out and repair equipment but whatever happens leads to them becoming more of a temporary field team. Likely the story is last surge in activity before, as Gary and Ray put it, it dwindled to them hardly getting calls and Egon leaving. And well, these new employees were the first to get liquidated.

edit: Or maybe they're the (only) applicants cleared for a franchise but then they have to shadow the team for a probationary period before they're cleared to whatever city they're from.

edit2: The Netflix panel's page finally showed up on Annecy's website.

If the series takes place while Egon is still in New York, I'm most interested in who would step in to voice him. I'm conflicted on whether he should be involved, due to them already having Summerville to explain his absence. But if they decide to recast, I'm sure there are some voice talents out there that could deliver a good Egon performance. Maurice LaMarche comes to mind, of course. But I'm not sure if they would want to mix voice casts from different iterations.

I also wonder if they will go the Hollywood route when casting the new team, like with other series. I feel it's likely that there will be at least one big name in there.

I’m thinking this has to take place before Egon leaves because he took most of the equipment and the car. Highly doubt they’d introduce another Ecto that’s never referenced in AL/FE?...AND give the new team their last proton packs/traps? Ray said Egon cleaned them out in Afterlife. It very much implies they had to close after that.

I don’t mind if Egon talks in this since he’d still be alive. Being silent in Afterlife was the right choice.

If it takes place after Egon leaves, The new team has to have wheels to get around in. I just hope it's an iconic vehicle and not that shitty station wagon. Ray has his motorcycle that's been sitting only god knows where and could be a brand new toy for him to drive around with depending on the cartoons setting.

So we may not get the Ecto-1 but we could get the Ecto-C. Maybe the new team paints vehicles they own to match the Ecto-1's paint scheme. I'll be betting the car makes an appearance.

As for my thoughts on Egon speaking, Maurice La Marche is still alive so it would be kind of nice to have him voice Egon if he's up to it. Even if there isn't a connection to Real Ghostbusters.

I may be misremembering from his audition anecdote for RGB, but didn't LaMarche mention he does have a more Ramis Egon voice? I know they auditions said 'don't do Ramis Egon' but LaMarche did so anyway and got the gig. I don't think they would go the route of Rookie in TVG or Egon in AL where he won't have any lines if he appears on this show.

When the audition asked for no impressions, Maurice had said he had a different take that was more like a Woody Allen version of Egon. I recall in the early episodes of season one, he was sounding a bit deeper like Ramis. It got adjusted at some point afterward.

Were getting a movie and animated series the question is still when, and what the heck it's going to look like. Lol. a preview is coming next month hopefully it's not a private screening. My guess is it's going to look like stranger things.

I'm guessing that it's going to be in the same style as Tales from 85.(What i,d really like is an animated style similar to Haunted Hotel.)

I've heard from some Ghostbusters franchise members (probably the ones who were fortunate enough in 2016 as part of that marketing campaign, as I didn't get anything despite being invited to the UK premiere of Frozen Empire) that they've received cryptic emails from "Janine" and to confirm their physical addresses. It's definitely legitimate from GhostCorps and not a scam. I wonder if there's an imminent promotional thing about to occur relating to this animated series.

Interesting. I would think if the series isn't coming out until next year it would be a bit early to begin the marketing for it. However, with Ghostbusters day approaching alongside the anniversary of Real Ghostbusters maybe they're promoting something related to the Anniversary instead?

Yup. My team received that email recently.

A small detail I forgot about...and given what I saw had no dialogue or text I can only speculate. What I saw was a group of young folks (probably meant to be college age but hard to tell) entering the firehouse to talk to Ray.

But someone had what I can only describe as, well...a ghost hand.

For some reason, the first thing that reminded me of was the later drafts of GB3 where the new team were mostly postgrad students studying anti-matter and CERN's discoveries which then leads to a ghost surge. The mid-90s was right around the time CERN was trapping anit-matter particles successfully. The ghost hand makes me think of experiment gone wrong. Intriguing nonetheless.

Based on what I saw...I think you just knocked it out of the park with that assessment Michael.

If this is going to be set in the 90's do we think that the Extreme Ghostbusters will be making an appearance alongside this new team? It would be nice to see that team in a new style of animation to be introduced in a later season. If the post grad students frequent the university and Egon's teaching classes.

No. If this new series is drawing a large degree of inspiration from the movie continuity, than I would not expect any reference to the XGBs.
