After a small delay, Ghostbusters: Dead Man's Chest continues with its second issue and it's well worth the wait as the action and mystery escalate as the recurring family dysfunction theme begins to expand and get complicated. Issue #2 opens with Trevor and Lucky's "friendiversary" being disrupted by a giant ghost kraken at a popular tourist destination. David Booher's writing and pacing continues to excel in this second mini-series. Trevor and Lucky get a much needed focus and spotlight. It was amusing to see how they're opposites of each other. Lucky tends to be spontaneous and ad hoc but Trevor is detail-oriented and likes having a plan. It's nice to see the banter between the two more akin to Ghostbusters: Afterlife than Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire where Lucky has a bit of fun poking at Trevor. And to boot, a funny New Yorker weighs in. Nice to see her back in action as well as that moment of reflection. I thought Booher totally captured Trevor in those series of texts Callie didn't see at first, heh heh.
Gary and Callie's through line from last issue continues but they get a third player in the form of a Sammy's dad Dr. Dan who is a great and fun foil to Gary. Dan quickly realizing Gary tries hard was hilarious. Nice blink-and-miss nod was Callie and Gary now have a shared locker like in Frozen Empire (in Back in Town, they had separate ones). And some nice development with Callie trying to learn the in's and out's of the Drone Trap.
Meanwhile, Ray in a similar role as Back in Town, provides exposition about the big bad. However, it's not a dry info dump on readers as it also reveals a very intriguing connection between the Kidd and Velez families. But in this case, we have a possible reincarnation angle. It certainly reminded me a little of Nadeem Razmaadi and his arc in Frozen Empire and a little of Winston and Shimabuku in RGB with a notion of a legacy and becoming a believer. All in all, it becomes clear the theme of familial dysfunction will apply to three groups of characters (the Spenglers, the Velez, the Kidds) in this story and no doubt converges into Issues #3 and #4. But the threat of Captain Kidd escalates when he shows up with a big honkin' fleet of ghost ships and leaves you wondering how the Ghostbusters are going to save New York this time. What was amusing was the one bit of lore Ray didn't mention which would account for Liberty Island being targeted this issue is that it's allegedly where Kidd hid his treasure before he was extradited to London and executed.
The Kraken ghost... well, guess Sewer Dragon wasn't the biggest thing they trapped after all. Nice touch that it was a semi-corporeal being as it was puncturing holes in the statue with its tentacles and not phasing through. And it took the torch out of Lady Liberty's hand! That's gonna cost some money to put back...
Thankfully, this issue fixes a concern I had with Phoebe potentially getting too much spotlight at the cost of Callie, Gary, and Trevor. And to boot, Lucky gets a very much needed feature. But we still have two issues to go. I'm cautiously optimistic. I am still wondering when the local law enforcement and government will intercede especially with what goes down in this issue. One aspect I am on the fence about is the theme of family. I understand that is the theme set forth in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and continues into Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire so it stands to reason it would be picked up on and expanded in the comic... but the comic is leaning into it a bit too much. When The Fast & The Furious got too entrenched in family, it became a meme. We don't need to keep seeing Phoebe forgetting then remembering she's part of a family, going it alone with a new friend, failing, remembering she's part of a team and "reuniting" with them in the finale to save the day over and over again ad nauseam. Should there be a third mini-series after the conclusion of Dead Man's Chest, it should focus on something else and break from the formula.
Dead Man's Chest #2 was another solid read. David Booher continues to nail writing for Phoebe, Trevor, Callie, and Gary, Ray, and the new characters. The pacing was well done, there is no slow down even during the required exposition, and you feel a little miffed when you realize you're on the last page. Art and colors by Aviv Or and Cris Peter also continue to be breathe of fresh air. New connections introduced in this issue start to make the puzzle picture a bit more clear and we're in for a more interesting showdown because of it.

The theory was it was chosen because it was within eyesight of his home on Pearl Street.
Ecto 1 &, Fire house exteriors, and the ghost trap - much better than Back In Town
Proton Packs, while better, are still missing some oomph. (Proton streams were good) -to be fair, Schoening did not use the in movie designs for several issues before they turned it into a joke; Proton Packs are tedious.
I found the sound effect noises to be off (Personal preference?) Ecto 1 does not go "Wheeoo" like a regular siren.
Ghosts are slightly cartoony, but not in an RGB/XGB good way? It could just be the colors for all I know. (Again this might just be personal preference)
STORY:
Fast paced, good building with certain characters, and the Spengler family humor was on point. (Remember, its different than the OGB's humor)
I'm excitedly awaiting issue 3, and hoping for a good action packed bust sequence.
David M Booher will do a Ghostbusters signing at the Dark Horse booth #2615 on July 25 1-1:50 pm. John Yurcaba will be there, too. https://www.instagram.com/p/DMGByjJRkL8/
The penultimate issue opens with pirate ghosts all over Manhattan causing mischief ("Sea Fright" from Real Ghostbusters comes to mind) while Phoebe and Sammy locate where Captain Kidd's house used to be in the Financial District and... it's not your typical scary haunted castle reveal. Well, at least it wasn't a Starbucks. Being the third of four issues, you would be correct in assuming Issue #3 is essentially the calm before the storm. It is a character-focused issue: our parent-child arcs get touched on some more but Lucky and Trevor continue to be a highlight of the series, and we get some clear answers about some of our new characters and naturally for the second-to-last issue, a cliffhanger ending.
The issue effectively sets up the emotional conclusion to the Dan / Sammy dynamic for the finale while also giving us a very slim clue about our big bad, Captain Kidd. "Father?" Sounds like we're going get another parent-child thing next issue. The action is very light so if you're not into introspection, hang tight with Issue #3 because it has to hit the final, necessary goal posts before the last issue in September. There are a lot of important insight that no doubt factors into Issue #4 at some point. I think of a lot of fans had a feeling what was going on internally with Sammy but here we get not only a definitive answer but we see both sides of the conflict, which felt heartbreaking and perhaps all too familiar for some of us. Hat tip to Booher for this particular scene and how Aviv Or staged it and how Cris Peter colored and lit it. The side by side panels of Dan and Sammy was good comic book framing.
What felt a little frustrating is Issue #3 is our big bad. If you're a Ghostbusters fan, you're pretty accustomed to the movie villains not showing up to dance until the end. But felt a little trolled with Kidd who only appears at the end of Issues #1-3! On the flip side, it's no doubt this is all leading to a lot of Captain Kidd in #4. An unfortunate aspect of the 4 issue format is David M. Booher has to keep things moving and can't spend 20 pages on something cool and cinematic like a whole issue of ghostbusting pirate ghosts throughout the city. In a way, it's reminiscent of one my quibbles with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in that once Garraka freezes New York, we don't get to see a big budget siege battle with Ghostbusters vs. a ghost army or much of a montage of ghosts terrorizing people - it cuts straight to the final showdown with the big bad.
Dead Man's Chest #3 was a great read. David Booher has the main cast down pat and takes it into higher gear with the new characters. Just because the issue is short on action, the introspection and dialogue does not slow down the brisk pace of the series. Issue #3 does some heavy lifting informing us about a certain conflict, elevating the emotional stakes, and giving answers but still leaving readers with questions heading into the finale. Still, this isn't an end-of-the-world doomsday scenario the movies constantly utilize and yet not really a big a threat as Madame Malveaux from the previous comic book mini-series. I'm very intrigued to see what Captain Kidd's actual goal is and I hope everyone else is, too! Maybe Ray was right after all.

With all the main team and guest stars in this arc, David Booher manages to give everybody a fun beat and some one liners. Booher also came up with a fun gimmick for the Ghostbusters in the mansion but due to the 20 page format, it is noticeable he had to get to stopping Captain Kidd as quick as he could. The idea of his mansion as a focal point of the issue would have been an interesting exploration of an anachronistic 'haunted house' phenomenon in the mainline movie canon (the Wander Hills Orphanage was a fun study of temporal displacement hauntings in the IDW canon) but alas this is only 4 issues and 20 pages each. It was relief that no one was really left out and everyone had a cool moment, some maybe more than others. Lucky got to blow away the Kidd Mansion with a ghost ship, the Ghostbusters' tech undergoes a transformation and they have to quickly adapt, and Ray traps Kidd with the Drone Trap (good thing he thought to bring that along). I was happy to see Ray get an action beat at last. And his quip of not getting on a boat anytime soon, lol. Dug the banter between the Ghostbusters in the siege of the mansion and really just them talking things out before they head into the mansion helps with that slow build of watching them become a solid team. But I'm hoping the next comic hands the big focus over to Callie and/or Gary. Give Phoebe a rest.
Story-wise, I think Dan and Sammy's issues got wrapped up a bit too abruptly. Not that I found it too interesting to begin with. It turned out to have no bearing on the main story, I thought it was somehow going to connect to Kidd's daughter looking like Sammy and become important in the final act battle i.e. the ghosts of Kidd's family shows up. Nope. On one hand, probably the finale got cut down in length due to the rigidity of a 4 issue, 20 page each format which is a common business decision of comic book companies. If only it was 5 issues instead (or really just 2-4 more pages), I think there would be more room for certain things to resolve in better detail and pacing.
It's no secret if you've been reading these reviews that I want more detail in the art. The character art was an improvement in this series but the equipment and locations still need more.
Captain Kidd just, irrationally, wanted his life back and sorta just was that angry ghost to trap in the end. That was a letdown.
And this is probably old man yelling at the sky talk but Frozen Empire, Back in Town, Dead Man's Chest - can we ever have a story end with just the OG packs trapping the big bad instead of some variant neutrona wand showing up at the end? I don't know, the novelty of that approach is losing its luster to me.
The only thing that really really irked me was the anachronism of an Engineer Corp patch on Lucky's khaki flight suit in one panel. I hope that was meant as an easter egg and not intentional or a mistake. The Spengler Team knows nothing about Engineer Corps at this point and don't find out until Frozen Empire. We don't even know when Winston establishes the group. If anything, I was hoping this incident would end with Ray becoming curious about cursed objects and wondering if he could somehow taking preventative action, seeding Repossessed and the Ionic Separator. But at least we did get some insight into another aspect of this era of ghostbusting: the Zeddemore Foundation. It makes perfect sense, Winston's wealth comes into play in the aftermath of the more destructive of cases and his not-for-profit being the tool he uses to resolve things is an obvious choice in retrospect.
Overall, I'm grateful for these new stories to fill in the gap between the recent movies and to have new material in the interim years before the next big media projects release but I want to be floored and these two mini-series so far have been "okay." Looking ahead, I look forward to the possibility of another mini-series heading into Year Two/2023 for the Spengler Family and I'm always hopeful we may see something a little different like maybe a 5 issue series or a one-shot special or annual or an ongoing series. We'll see. It took awhile for this second title to be announced, something like 7 months. So we may not hear anything until March next year! The sooner the better. Dead Man's Chest #4 was an entertaining melee that brings our second Dark Horse mini-series to its end with a couple fun surprises. While a couple more pages or an issue would have helped plus the story, it was a satisfying enough conclusion but there's still room for improvement.

Very much with MrMichaelT on this one too. I found stuff to enjoy, and I found Dead Man’s Chest livelier than Back In Town, but still… the IDW stuff once Erik, Dan and Luis were in charge was just non-stop joy. I never had to find stuff to enjoy, it was just great. The Dark Horse stuff shows promise, but it’s such a step back it does feel quite disheartening.
Rather like Aliens moving to Marvel from (ironically) Dark Horse, it does feel like Ghostbusters lost a bit of its soul in the move.

I don't know about Dead Man's Chest, but I know Back in Town was written for all ages which REALLY limited what they could do. They're also limited by being a prequel comic and can't really have any character growth or anything like that.
We're also in a different place with the franchise. It's much more alive than it was when the previous comics were coming out. 88MPH launched when the franchise was basically all but dead and then IDW came out with The Other Side (ick) in 2008. There was NOTHING going on aside from the video game which was, at the point, either still being developed or was going through that publisher hell when Atari folded. I can only imagine that there weren't too many stipulations on what they could and couldn't do with the characters back then.
Anyway, personally, I'll keep supporting the Dark Horse books with the hopes that they continue to improve. I'm not expecting on-going IDW era quality, but I do expect these to keep getting better as we get more stories out there and HOPEFULLY we can get some places post Frozen Empire.

I hope so, too. Having the stories happening prior to Frozen Empire makes it hard to be more creative, I'd imagine.
I appreciate Back in Town for filling in some gaps between films, but I just couldn't get into it. The art wasn't for me, and the story took some odd turns. That said, I did like the pages where
Phoebe was doing standup comedy for an audience of ghosts, lol.

I thought Dead Man's Chest was a real improvement. The artwork and villain were more engaging.
It took IDW a few tries to rise to the level they did by 2011, so I'm still optimistic for Dark Horse's future efforts. If they remain in midquel territory, I hope they do a story of how the paranormal research center was set up. I've always wondered how the Possessor and the other ghosts were captured.
Venkman has yet to appear in the series. Has it been stated if that's a creative choice or if they've been told not to use him like IDW were told (for a time) not to use Dana and Louis?

Totally agree.

No, we don't know if it was dictated Peter is off-limits or if it was a creative choice. Presumably, he and Dana are still living upstate near SUNY Cortland and back to a non-GB life after the events of Afterlife. We still have no idea exactly when the PRC was founded between movies and it seems like they haven't yet as of Dead Man's Chest, but at some point after it is logically would be when Peter is back to Manhattan proper.

Yeah, it would make sense to save him for the PRC. The only hint of the PRC we've seen so far has been the engineering patch on Lucky's uniform. But that felt more like a flub to me, rather than confirmation.

I'm hoping Captain Kidd and his cursed saber is a driving factor in Winston starting the PRC i.e. the amount of repairs and lawsuits that could be avoided by preemptively seeking out and exorcising charged objects would be to his benefit (and the Ghostbusters), lol.
I still think they should in part use the comics to focus on arcs for Callie, Gary, Trevor, and Lucky since the 2 movies, let's face it the focus is on strongly on Phoebe. Trevor and Lucky got a decent role in Dead Man's Chest for example. And it's still a little weird there's no interaction with police or government yet. I assumed Mayor Peck was waiting for his moment to strike, having to wait for them to make a big mistake i.e. the Sewer Dragon case and cause some damage around City Hall but in Dead Man's Chest, they had a huge bust at Liberty Island and Lady Liberty was damaged.

I hope that connection gets made. That's a good logical bridge to the PRC.

The films are definitely Phoebe's show. If the animated movie and series end up focusing on new teams, the comics may be the only place to expand significantly on the other team members like Gary and Callie, etc. I think there are stories to tell with those characters.
I enjoyed Trevor and Lucky's friendiversary. The entire capture of the Kraken Ghost was a highlight of Dead Man's Chest.

Yeah, I guess they felt they couldn't get ahead of that scene in Peck's office from Frozen Empire. Understandable, but also a bit of a plothole. Hopefully, having to write inside a box like this won't create too many conflicts with Frozen Empire as we go along.
Found an old David Booher interview from November 25 of last year. Up to about 17 minutes, he talks about Ghostbusters and Dead Man's Chest. Sounds like be had a bit of creative freedom, "I was like thinking of ideas because they sort of let us kind of create our own ideas, our stories in the world of Ghostbusters."
An interesting bit is he mentions he saw GB2 and RGB when he was a kid and then towards 17 min. he says he hopes to write more and teases he's got more ideas and he'd love to bring in RGB villains and he's a Vigo stan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tuPptagvg8
