Bummer. They were probably just using however many advance copies too likely a limited amount. But they're going to attempt a signing around Comic Con, too. I mean, really if you bump into them at an convention.

YHS posted its July schedule and there's one out the ordinary, a livestream with both YHS and Interdimensional Crossrip Podcast on July 9. Undoubtedly for them to promote and talk about this book and its release.

And they have a book signing at July 25 the week of SDCC but the details are still being ironed out.

Just got my copy of the Deluxe version. What a wonderful book. I just skimmed though it looking at the pictures, i'll actually read it later on, but its filled with all sorts of concept art for both the show and the figures, exactly what i wanted. I love that Ink and Marker old school style of concept art and this book is filled with it. So worth the 120 dollars i spent on it!

Craig, Troy and Chris live. Will edit as I go.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnbQ8V5PRo0

-Craig's first idea was just Kenner and merch
-Dark Horse suggested 50/50 with Kenner and making of show
-cold calls/phone books and LinkedIn to find people to interview
-26 min, shows mock up example John Yurcaba helped make
-Dan Riba found Gabi Payn's 1st Boogieman drawing and it was large format paper so Troy had to find a large format scanner at a shop, and he was so nervous feeding it through the barrel feed so he tried one from his kids art first
-Craig did photography using a lot of his collection
-Craig, Abbey, Jacob went to Pittsburgh by car to photograph a collection then wind up toys plus others at a private museum in Cincinnati run by collectors, Andy Heyward's papers were at University of Wyoming so they hired archivists to go in and do the work since neither could get there in time - conferred over phone if it was Ghostbusters, other collectors were taking photos and sending it to them
-structure of the book about 36 min. in, many debate about resorting it, Joe Medjuck was a good sounding board for it and everything
-RGB Cassette maybe from Bobby80s
-couldn't get Coulier (but in retrospect didn't know he was sick), talked to JMS
-Ken Duer was a big help, also had photos of Japanese crew, got them in touch with others like Richard Raynis (said i don't do interviews but ken said you guys are cool), Rosen (who is Conan's agent, too) gave them 20 min. while he ate
-cutting room floor: 49 min. in: Janine You've Changed storyboards, JMS's original treatment,
-got Michael Gross's materials from GhostCorps/Eric from boxes of Ivan Reitman's from Montecito office back in 2018/19, then Troy called up Eric to look through that box again for this book, the memos you see in the book. Hasbro sent QC samples like one for Ghost Trap toy, a rather liberal article by Corrine Rupert from Q5 of it's ok for boys to play with girl toys and vice versa, LA Times article from 80s about Q5, Ryan Doell allowed photography of his Ecto Glows, non-Kenner merch page count kept shrinking, Fright Feature repaints (very small version in book), a memo from Columbia to Gabi Payn's mom saying they were proud of Gabi's work and confirmed the art she did
-Michael Gross owned the company with the license to make Slimer shirts
-Chris sent photos - Heinz pasta, clock, watches, Slimer and RGB cereal box

You left off your cool shoutout at the end of the podcast! :-)

What a fun book! I can't wait to really dive in.

It's hard to put into words how much I love the covers on the Deluxe edition. I say that being a massive fan of the Gabi Payne art.

Well, I didn't want to brag about it. ;) I was happy to hear Dark Horse liked my review.

It is. I plowed through the book in 2 sittings. Hard to put down but someone's gotta take out the trash.

The RGB Firehouse has some kind of sexy nerd appeal. It's why it worked so good as the Time Life box set.

I completely forgot this book even came out, but I ended up grabbing a copy from Amazon.

I’m loving it so far! There’s a ton of stuff I never knew, and even the things I did know (like the whole Q5 situation and Dave Coulier taking over as Venkman) are covered in way more detail than I expected.

I’ve just been jumping around between sections, so I still need to sit down and read the whole thing from start to finish.

I feel your pain, I had to send a message to Forbidden Planet on Friday as they'd cancelled my order for unknown reasons.

They've reinstated it as of Monday, but I still don't know why it was cancelled. :whatever:

I finally finished this and have sat with it a while - and I have thoughts. I saw the stream above with Troy and Craig and they did pre-empt some of my feelings but I still wanted to discuss them. So first and foremost as an RGB fan this is a 10/10 must own book. As someone on the periphery of the fanbase, huge fans of Craig and Troy’s work in the community, and aware they do post and read this forum so want any feedback to be supportive and constructive but also wanted to collate my honest thoughts and try to give a review / feedback.

The structure of the book is perfectly judged, leading with the inception of the show and weaving in the toys and merch, before doing a deep-dive on the Q5 fallout. The original sketches of the various ghosts and iconic villains is exactly the sort of unearthed gems I wanted from a book like this and the original Kenner design docs are equally fascinating.

The text around the show tends to focus more on the corporate machinations behind the scenes - it lightly touches on the creative decisions of individual writers, and I liked how it added some human stories, which contextualise elements of the show. In an ideal world there’d be more to say about individual episodes and Tokyo animators but I understand why obtaining such material 40 years later may not be possible and would be beyond the scope of the book.

Craig mentioned he initially wanted the book to be encyclopaedic but for various reasons this wasn’t possible and so the nature of the book changed. And Chris Stewart pointed out there are online wikis etc for people who want that. But… I don’t really follow why the encyclopaedic approach wasn’t compatible with the (excellent) text content.

On the stream they shared artwork which wasn’t included and other pieces that were included but small scale on the page. Part of the reason for this is formatting. The book has a retro style reminiscent of the 80’s RGB board game cover, which is a solid stylistic choice, it looks neat, but it also means there are rounded corners, borders and large margins which take up page space. The Jurassic Park, Ghostbusters, BTTF Ultimate Visual History books feature smaller, light weight fonts with a ratio of approx 1:3 text to images and no rounded corners meaning images can be tiled and overlapped without messing with the formatting. By comparison the font size here is much larger and weightier meaning there is more space dedicated to text than perhaps was needed. I’m guessing these aesthetic choices were handled by Dark Horse, but immediately there appears to be substantial underutilised space, in my opinion. The featured episode sidebars are an example of this.

There is a lot of Kenner art here and some great product shots, including most of the packaging from the first two waves, but I feel like there was a way to include packaging from all waves if photos existed. Perhaps it’s being saved for a second volume or additional merchandise book which I would be totally down for.

If there is too much art to fit it in the book, I’d question some of the shot selections. Eg.a full page dedicated to a photo of Carl Anderson, when some of the RGB firehouse artwork from the series gets a tiny like 1/8 page, for example. Or why the chapter headers waste half a page on a mirror image of the top half. Or half a page on a Mount Rushmore cel from a season 5 episode. And with the TV show coverage there is a lack of actual shots from the show. I get we can see those ourselves outside of the book, but with James Eatock demonstrating how AI upscaling can achieve great results with individual shots, it would’ve been cool to get a selection of key shots or scenes for a visual history. I was also expecting content like a breakdown of the peripheral recurring characters, themes, central characterisation and plotting prior to Q5 meddling, but perhaps that would be more suited to a show encyclopaedia or guide book.

The absence of shots from the show makes me assume this is to due to licensing costs (with DIC?), which has been circumvented using cel photos. Most cels show signs of degrading, and don’t necessarily present the best visual from the episodes being discussed plus the white backgrounds can be visually repetitive. I’m kind of blasé about the production cel market - you can head to eBay or go to conventions etc and pick up all sorts of cels. I have a Sandman cel and a few promo cels but you can’t display them without degradation and so for me they don’t possess value as a collectors item.

With the Now / Marvel comics I’d have liked maybe 4-8 pages of some key art and covers. But I assume licensing/royalties is part of the issue here too.

It’s very easy to make these observations when you don’t have to produce a book like this yourself. It’s a Herculean effort - the book is great, I could not put it down and every page had something engaging. I am left wanting more - and whilst I think there were ways to squeeze more out of the available space - if sales are good I’d be up for an expanded edition or any other related projects.

I would happily take the promo cels off your hands. You can display them with heavy UV filtration in windows and framing in an ideally dark room. The Xerox-based line art doesn't age well on some cels at all, though.

I'm slowly working my way through the book, soaking up every detail. I think my favorite bit so far is the Michael Gross memo on GB2 letterhead informing the artists that Slimer doesn't have a tail.

I think the layout artists on the book did a great job. I like the tape, I like the rounded corners, so much of it gives a "pulled from a dusty old box and scanned" vibe. Old, hand-made corporate creativity.

Yes, I wish I'd known this prior to displaying, or there was some way to restore them. The best cel of the promo batch I had is unfortunately affected. I do have the pencil line work though, which would be cool to display and presumably less likely to spoil.

I'd consider parting with them given my current expenditure on the Mondo line. Will think on it.

I've been leaning towards getting this book set. Are the animation cells included random, or manufactured to be the same variants? Sorry if I'm late to the game with this question, just curious. I have other plans tying up my funds at the moment

From what I've seen, they're all the same, Ray sliding down the fire pole, and Egon using the P.K.E. Meter.

I've kicked around the idea of making a new cel layer with restored black line art pulled from the cel drawing. I'm sure it would take some testing to nail the size, but it would be a non-destructive way of restoring the faded lines.
